Mission and objectives

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD), a regional branch of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), was established in 1987, tasked with assisting countries in the Asia-Pacific region in achieving their peace, security and disarmament goals; this assistance may take the shape of substantive support, activity coordination and information sharing on global and regional activities. The Centre’s mandate stems from General Assembly resolution 1/42/39D, which establishes UNRCPD’s role of providing, upon request, implementation support for peace and disarmament programming to countries in the region. The Centre covers 43 UN Member States in Asia and the Pacific and operates under four major pillars: Conventional Weapons, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Peace and Disarmament Education and Cross Cutting Issues including emerging technologies and gender equality.

Context

UNRCPD implements many programmes and projects to support 43 Member States in the Asia and the Pacific region in strengthening their peace and security goals while enhancing regional peace by building trust and confidence. Public information and outreach is a key cross-cutting section that is a strategic priority of the Centre and the UNV would be tasked to support this effort by assisting in the development and dissemination of accurate and up-to-date information about the work of the Centre and key disarmament relevant information.

The UN Volunteer will support the work of the Centre as the communications focal point creating contents to raise awareness on the importance of disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control in the Asia Pacific region. Creative content-creation is highly encouraged and the Centre is seeking new ideas to enhance public awareness on disarmament issues. The UNV will also have opportunities to participate in project planning meetings with substantive officers of the Centre providing inputs on communications strategies and ensuring that the Centre’s communications requirements are being met during the planning and implementing phase of projects and programmes run by the Centre.

In addition, the UNV will be tasked to research current trends, create accessible contents, collect stories and participate in various disarmament activities conducted in the region to record and communicate to Government partners, civil society partners and the general public. The UNV will also be tasked to maintain and update the list of contacts of partners and develop regular communications materials informing our partners of the work of the Centre. The UNV will interact with the Information Outreach Branch in UNODA HQ in New York, substantive officers and project leads at UNRCPD and will report to the Deputy Director of the Centre.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Assist the Centre with strategic communication and public outreach;
• Assist in developing creative contents to deliver accurate and timely information relevant to disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control in the Asia Pacific region;
• Participate in planning and implementing phases of different programmes and projects undertaken by the Centre and support the development of materials to highlight their im-pact and results;
• Assist the drafting and editing publications (fact sheets, brochures, newsletters, etc.);
• Support the organization of, and participate in global, regional and national conferences and workshops on key disarmament topics;
• Proactively contribute suggestions and ideas for design projects that will add value to the work of the Centre;
• Any other duties required by the supervisor.

This assignment is funded by the Government of Korea and therefore specific criteria apply:

• Candidates must be Korean nationals.
• Candidates must be between 22 and 29 years old at the time of application. NOTE: If you are older than 26 when applying, the system will display a notification that the ’application does not meet the eligibility criteria’. Please disregard this notification and submit your application.
• Candidates who have already served as UN Youth Volunteer funded by the Government of Korea are not eligible to apply (former UN University Volunteers are eligible).
• Candidates may apply to a maximum of three assignments and indicate the order of preference in the ‘Additional remarks’ field when filling in the application form.
• Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment.

Other information

Living conditions and remarks

Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, lies under the Phase II of the UN Security classification, but
is subject to change depending on the development of the security situation. Living conditions in Kathmandu are good. Comfortable and inexpensive flats (furnished and unfurnished) are available in Kathmandu. Both imported and local foods and clothing are abundantly available. There is a short supply of water while it is also not safe to drink without treatment. Public transport is easily available and generally reliable though traffic congestion is extremely high. Kathmandu has a temperate climate with coldest temperature reaching just above zero at the night during the winter and mild but humid during the monsoon period, mid-June to end September.
