JOB OPPORTUNITY

PHASE Nepal is an NGO working in remote communities of Nepal. The organization aims to improve the livelihoods of the people in the region through various projects related to health, education, and livelihoods, by implementing projects and conducting research to share learnings.

Position: Research interns

Duration: 3 to 9 months depending upon the benefit envisioned to the interns.

The duration of the internship will be tailored to individual intern’s need, their time available and research requirements. For example, some of the interns might want to do straight certain days, weeks, months, or certain days every week, or month for a longer period.

Benefits and allowances:

Please note, this is a non-salaried internship opportunity. You will not be treated as the staff of PHASE Nepal and neither gets any salary and benefits. However, we will cover your cost of public transport and will provide you with lunch for the days you come to the office and for the days you are helping in the fieldwork.

Project description and scope of internship:

PHASE Nepal is implementing a mixed-method implementation study to assess the living condition, mental health status and access to services of people living in informal settlements in Kathmandu and Pokhara valley of Nepal. The study aims to strengthen relationships between relevant stakeholders and improve accountability towards them. The study will involve collecting data through surveys, interviews, and a few participatory methods (social mapping, transect walk and photo voice).

  • You will learn to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data manually as well as using relevant software.
  • You will learn how to structure, write and submit academic papers.
  • You will be named as an author if you lead yourself or named as co-author on the peer-reviewed academic papers others write based on your contribution in the research process.
  • You will learn how to develop basic research proposals.
  • You will have an opportunity to work with experienced researchers.
  • You will learn how to use the basics of research software such as Kobo toolbox, NVivo, SPSS, Endnote, etc.
  • You will learn to develop your CV, and application letters for jobs and universities if you are interested.
  • Upon successful completion of your internship, you will get an experience letter explaining your involvement in different components of research and you can also put one of the mentors or PHASE Nepal staff as your reference for future careers.

During this internship, the intern will assist in the following areas:

  • Conduct field surveys, in-depth interviews, and participatory methods, and support in other data collection tools.
  • Assist in the transcription and translation of data.
  • Contribute to data analysis, report-writing and articles for peer review journals for publication
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to achieve project objectives.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the project.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology, or any other relevant field.
  • Individuals with Masters’ Degree who want to build their research experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Academic coursework and a keen interest in applied research, particularly in publishing a manuscript on the study findings.
  • Experience in conducting field surveys, in-depth interviews and using participatory methods will be beneficial.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Nepali.
  • Good computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
