JOB OPPORTUNITY

Research Intern

International Development Enterprises (IDE) Nepal, is an International NGO with market-based agriculture and WASH development program in Nepal. iDE has been working in Nepal since 1992. From irrigation and good quality seeds to, more recently, rural collection centers where farmers can sell their produce, we provide simple innovations that help rural communities get out of poverty and adapt to climate change. iDE is recruiting a Research Intern for its Central Office, Lalitpur immediately.

1. Project Background

Nepal has achieved significant progress in the WASH sector by eliminating open defecation. The success is attributed to a dedicated movement supported by government engagement, collaboration, and investments from various stakeholders. The Sanitation Marketing Initiative by iDE was crucial in increasing sanitation coverage, particularly in the Terai districts, by promoting the affordable and improved Easy Latrine design. While celebrating ODF achievements is essential for behavior change and expansion, sustaining ODF status and meeting sanitation goals remain challenges. Fecal Sludge Management is now a priority, as most rely on onsite sanitation systems with limited information and inadequate disposal services. Engaging the private sector and marginalized communities in dignified sanitation solutions is necessary, including exploring alternatives like ready-to-install septic tanks.

The Piloting Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) Solutions in Nepal Project aims to identify cost-effective and desirable FSM solutions for rural households. The project will carry out a pilot study to understand customer preferences, assess the impact of seasons on FSM, and evaluate the desirability of an FSM product. In addition to conducting behavioral and contextual research, the pilot will involve testing the product and sales strategies. Furthermore, the project will collaborate with the private sector to explore innovative treatment options for fecal sludge, such as utilizing Black Soldier Fly Larvae.
