Main purpose of job:

To support delivery of UK objectives in Nepal through use of communications. As Communications Lead, working within the politics and partnerships team, you will plan and implement the embassy’s communications strategy. You will lead on the design and implementation of effective communication and outreach strategies in order to raise engagement with a broad Nepali audience and influence decision makers, increase awareness and understanding of the UK’s work in Nepal and the UK. This will cover a range of Nepal and global issues from international development, to trade, diplomacy and consular issues. You will work closely with the Ambassador, Development Director and teams across the embassy to communicate the impact of our work, and to build on the UK’s positive perception in Nepal.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Externally you will be responsible for shaping and implementing the embassy’s external communications strategy, aiming to influence, amplify the impact of programmes and improve awareness of the UK’s work in Nepal. This will include:

  • Making strategic use of digital communication platforms and lead on delivery of digital activity at Postin, including designing social media campaigns, producing multimedia pieces, blogs and web stories, social media posts to promote impact and outcome of the embassy’s development programmes. As part of this manage the embassy’s social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as monitor for news related to the UK’s work in Nepal. As part of this you will help with content for the ambassador’s social media
  • Lead design/delivery of coherent Embassy press and communication activities, drawing on, as required, the full suite of written content and tools – news releases. Produce written content (with colleagues) to showcase UK work and impact in Nepal. This will entail informing opinion pieces, interviews, blogs. You will also need to produce multimedia content – shooting and editing videos, designing posters, editing photos, and other media for use on embassy communication channels. This will also entail ensuring that visits have high impact communications.
  • Lead on monitoring and evaluating of embassy’s communications activities – both for one off events and long running campaign and use this to deliver improvements. Build and work with a network of journalists to help ensure coverage of UK related news in national media and the embassy’s work (including for example during visits by Ministers and other senior officials to Nepal), UK interests and broader FCDO milestones.
  • Develop specific implementation plans for embassy, considering how best to use a wide range of media to deliver priority messages including inquiries from national, and international media publications and other similar agencies on UK related new Lead on crisis communications for the embassy, including to compile useful information for the crisis leader’s benefit, inform crisis leader for media interviews and brief media if/when required
  • You will also be expected to work as part of the Politics and Partnerships team to support wider team work and internal communications, political reporting and leading/supporting on key elements of cross-Post work e.g. King’s birthday party, high level visits/events.

To achieve this within British Embassy Kathmandu you will also need to: work with senior leadership to check on ambition levels of BEK communication strategy and approach, including on UK priorities. It will also be essential to build relationships within teams to help them identify and respond to key communications opportunities – where your expertise will be essential to help translate technical input into clear and impactful communications products. You will also take a leading role in planning any communications related to VIP visits and events working with teams and senior leaders across the embassy.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

No line management responsibility but you will be expected to build a virtual team and network of communications focal points in teams across the embassy to assist your delivery.

Oversight of small local communications budget and spend with media organisations (eg social media)

British Embassy Kathmandu is a supportive workplace and we encourage all staff to develop. British Embassy Kathmandu encourages flexible working and there is scope to propose different working patterns. Following the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions all staff are expected to work three days from the office but there is flex around this, subject to agreement with line management. The nature of this role does not lend itself to remote or part time work. It will also require you to attend occasional weekend or evening events (for which time off in leiu or overtime would be provided) or to respond to breaking events at odd hours.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  •  At least 3-5 years successful and proven record in a leadership Press/PR/Communications role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field
  • A good awareness of communications activities as well as experience of designing and implementing communications activities, including campaigns, social media, dealing with journalists. Experience of producing media content. Ideally a communications related qualification or equivalent experience in a communications role.

Language requirements:

Language: Nepali and English

Level of language required: Excellent spoken and written required for both

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience: Past experience in a similar organisation (eg NGO, Embassy, Government or media organisation) or of media work including journalism or digital media would be helpful for the role as well as an understanding of Nepal’s media landscape.
